Although Topher has completed ruck events in the past he’s fairly new to GORUCK events. In the past year he’s completed his first Light, moved to a Tough/Light, then completed the Bragg Heavy. In this episode he tells some great stories about the Bragg Heavy event and things he learned from it.

Thanks for the podcast! I completed Bragg heavy 2020 and it was enjoyable to hear another perspective and remember the crazy stuff we did.
Thank you! That’s one of the things I really like about these types of events… you talk to people afterwards and they remember, or even had, entirely different experiences from you. Awesome job on completing that event!
Your guest was a prick. I love your podcast, but this ain’t it chief. I got through sixteen minutes of it.
I appreciate the feedback here. I will say he goes through a lot of growth in the episode and acknowledges where he falls short of being a team player at GORUCK events. He talks about appreciating these events because they give him opportunities to improve in that area. I know a lot of people talk about the physical side of GORUCK events but I always find the mental interesting as well. I found his mental growth and self reflection inspiring and I was hoping listeners would as well.
At one point GORUCK’s tag line was building better Americans. Not building the best Americans or building the perfect American but building better Americans. Although I’d argue building better humans is more what they’re trying to accomplish (since they run events internationally) I think the idea stands. If someone finishes an event in a better spot, state of mind, or wanting to continue improvement then I think that’s what this is all about. Improving people… all people… even if you think that person is a prick. Towards the end of the episode Topher talks about where he would ideally be and that’s as a nice, positive person at events. The people he saw being generous at the Heavy were inspiring to him and that’s what we need in this world. People wanting to be better and actually doing things to be better. When I think of what makes a GRT that’s one of the top items.
My comments were made as a fan of you personally and the podcast. You have a great attitude and I look forward to the podcast each week. I started rucking at about the same time as your guest and your podcast was essential in my preparation for my event and discovering the roots of Goruck. I have listened to every episode of All Day Ruckoff and have probably watched most of your YouTube content as well. You have had a wide variety of guests with most of them being some of the most humble, yet accomplished people in the GRT community. Even guests that were clearly burned out on events and changes within Goruck still came across as being relatively well adjusted and positive people. Every guest has been informative and the majority of them were inspirational as well.
I got a chance to do an event in Charlotte, NC with Rick from Podcast 079. Cadre Dan was also there. It was cool to finally put a face to these people and their stories.
The goal of self-improvement was the main reason behind me doing my first event. It was difficult to follow at TL that had no clue what they were doing and having teammates that were clearly not carrying their weight. I totally get the frustration. Light events definitely have more of these than the tougher events. However, doing what is in the best interest of the team should eventually win out and allow you to put getting to the end with everyone over your negative feelings toward a Gray Man/Blue Falcon. I guess that lesson takes longer to settle in for some people than others. I wish the guy the best, but the lesson doesn’t seem to be setting in for him after multiple events. It’s no secret what these events are. Humility and service over self. That is honestly about the only way to make it through a team event. Selection may be more of his cup of tea.
Hey Brian, I really appreciate the support and feedback and know it comes from a good place. That’s one of the reasons I felt like I should really address what I enjoyed about the episode and where I think the takeaways are. Towards the end of the episode Topher talks about realizing that he’s not the team member he really wanted to be and ways to address it at future events. We all work towards self-improvement at different speeds and I have to commend anyone that’s headed in the right direction.
I absolutely agree that humility and service over self is the best way to make it through a team event but we both know not everyone at events has those two attributes. My hope is that when people who are lacking those listen to this podcast they start to realize that and maybe look at ways they can work on self-improvement in that respect.
Brian J., I’ll buy you a beer if you listen to the whole thing.
I will finish it on my next long ruck which should be Friday. I am doing the Cadre Reunion Tough on 11/17/2020. We can grab a beer if you attend.
October 17, 2020. Sorry for the typo.
Cadre Reunion should be quite the event! Excited for it?
I am! It looks like they are going to try to cram a Heavy into a Tough. Hopefully I will get to meet some of the other people you have had on your podcast.
Podcast finished. I wish you the best with your future events.
