The Robbie Miller WOD is replacing the push-ups and sit-up test at GORUCK Heavy events. Cadre Dan broke the news to us about this change in All Day Ruckoff Podcast 088. This was made in addition to some other GORUCK Heavy changes. One thing he specifically mentioned was that it is up to the cadre’s discretion whether the team will complete either the full or the half WOD.
If you’re registered (or considering registering) for a GORUCK Heavy then you should absolutely give both the full and half WODs a chance. It turns out the Heavy is the ultimate team event so your teammates can assist you during the WOD. At this point I imagine there are quite a few people breathing a sigh of relief knowing they won’t have to complete 72 unassisted pull-ups!
Even if you are not registered for a GORUCK Heavy event you should still give this a shot. It is important to remember that this incredible workout is in memory of a remarkable person.
Equipment
To complete this workout you’ll need the following equipment:
The Workout
As previously mentioned it is completely up to the Cadre’s discretion whether the class will complete the full or the half WOD. It is in your best interest to try them both at least once.
The Robbie Miller WOD
The revised Robbie Miller WOD (as featured in the GORUCK Tribe: January, 2021 challenge) is as follows:
- 3 Mile Ruck
- 12 Rounds:
- 6 x Sandbag/Ruck Rows
- 6 x Burpee Squats (Full Burpee with Jump followed by Squat)
- 6 x 4 Ct Mountain Climbers
- 6 x Rucksack Getups
- 3 Mile Ruck
The original Robbie Miller WOD is as follows.
- 3 Mile Ruck
- 12 Rounds
- 6 x Ring Pull-Ups
- 6 x Burpee Squats (Full Burpee with Jump followed by Squat)
- 6 x 4 Ct Mountain Climbers
- 6 x Rucksack Getups
- 3 Mile Ruck
During the second annual Robbie Miller GORUCK Heavy the ruck was only required for both 3 mile rucks and the rucksack getups. However this is *probably* up to cadre discretion. Bragg Heavy 2019 used the ruck for all exercises and movements so prepare yourself…
The Robbie Miller Half WOD
The Robbie Miller Half WOD is as follows.
- 12 Rounds
- 6 x 33 Foot Shuttle Run (One Way, 3 Round Trips Total)
- 6 x Burpee Squats (Full Burpee with Jump followed by Squat)
- 6 x 4 Ct Mountain Climbers
- 6 x Rucksack Getups
In testing the rucksack has only been required for the rucksack getups however it’s probably up to cadre discretion. Although Bragg Heavy did the full WOD they also used the ruck for all exercises and movements so prepare yourself…
Make This Count
Have you given this workout a shot yet? I’d love to see some times in the comments. Cadre Dan mentioned that it took most people 2 to 3 hours to complete the full WOD. If you’re curious about the Robbie Miller GORUCK event then I highly recommend checking out the All Day Ruckoff Podcast episode 040. That episode is an interview with Cadre Karl after he ran the first ever Robbie Miller Memorial GORUCK Heavy.
Finally, good luck with this WOD! There’s a slight chance that you’ll need it.
Did this yesterday with my BF for Tribe (wasn’t able to do it in Jan Bc I had covid). Had to modify a bit for the teens but the whole thing took about 2 hrs 45 mins.
Awesome job!
I used this last night, when looking for a workout to do, and modified the full WOD to use 100m ruck runs in either side (similar to an earlier post), as my kids were in bed. Just over 39 minutes, using a 45# plate for the getups and ruck runs.
It was this event that got me into the goruck movement. I happen to come across the amazing story of bravery and sacrifice this man made and it was surreal because we have the exact same name. My name is also Robert James Miller and that is what struck me so. I was too late to do this event (and out of shape if I’m honest) but I’ve started training and I want to honor the legacy of the name we both share. I love that this is making it’s way into all events and not just a year event January.
I did it at home in late January for the first time when I heard about the changes. I did everything without a ruck and held the ruck plate for the get-ups, finished in 2:39 thanks to a bathroom break before the last three miles. I have a Heavy in three months so I plan on rotating it in more often now.
Awesome job, it’s a surprisingly long workout! You know a workout is long when bathroom breaks are involved 😂
Bataan Death March Heavy in Cleveland:
Modified full WoD at a playground.
Start with an approximately 100m ruck run.
Then the full WoD using the ruck only for the get ups, using playground equipment bars for the pull ups.
Finish with an approximately 100m ruck run.
I’d say the finish times ranged from 45 mins to 65 mins. 9 participants.
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment with this! Seems like playgrounds would be ideal places to find equipment bars for those pesky pull-ups.
What is the half wod shuttle run? The descriptions don’t make sense to me.
A shuttle run is where you sprint from your start to another location, traditionally pick something up, and sprint back. The way the WOD is written is to put emphasis on the number 6. You’re doing 3 complete 33 foot shuttle runs which turns into 6 individual 33 foot runs.
An easy way to do this is to set three rocks down (per set, so 36 rocks total) then walk 33 feet away and set your ruck down. Sprint from you ruck to the rocks, pick up a rock, and sprint back to the ruck dropping the rock off. Do this two more times and you’ve got 3 rocks at your ruck and 33 rocks left (because you have 11 more sets to do) then you move on to the burpee squats.
The half WOD shuttle run, is it 6 trips up and down the 33’ or do you make trips to the 11’, 22’ , and 33’?
My understanding is 3 trips at the 33′ distance.
It seems “Burpee Squats” is not a well-defined exercise. Could you elaborate on exactly what this is? Perhaps link a youtube video?
I’ll update the workout! It’s full burpee (with jump) and when you get back to standing it’s a full squat. It seems to really limit the speed you can get the burpees done at because you can’t just charge through the jump into the next burpee.
Thanks for the clarification! There are so many variations on burpees… it’s good to be on the same page. Of course you never know what to expect at an event.
Bragg live feed shows it for everything…
Must be cadre discretion then! That’s brutal.
Pull-ups with Ruck On?
In the 2nd annual Robbie Miller GORUCK Heavy the ruck was only used for both 3 mile rucks and the rucksack getups. I’ll confirm with Dan if that’s a strict rule or if it’s cadre discretion… because I could see a select few requiring it for absolutely everything.
The pullups will be hard enough for most, cant imagine having the ruck on.
I need to lookup Burpee Squats. Never heard of those.
It s a kickass Wod…With a meaning !!It was awsome at the event…..And a real mindkiller when i did it again by myself (In 2 feet of snow and -8 C….Damn i miss Florida!!😂)
