These hats are absolutely amazing for cold weather. They will keep your head warm during those overnight rucks and when you’re outside in the freezing cold temperatures. If you’re looking for a cool weather knit cap (50 degree weather) then these might be a little warm for you. If you want these to maintain their size then don’t put them in the dryer… there’s a chance that will shrink them.
- Made: USA
- Materials: 100% Acrylic with Thinsulate for insulation
I frankly was not initially sold on the idea of doing a run of these knit caps. My main concern was that they are made of acrylic and use Thinsulate for insulation. I had no idea what that would feel like or how it would hold up at a GORUCK event. I settled on getting two samples made that I could test out before going all-in on an order. Thankfully, I was surprised and impressed with the results and decided to do a full run.
The samples arrived and within four weeks I had taken one of the caps through two GORUCK Tough events. In the above picture the hat on the left is new and the one on the right is after two events. The hat still looks great and functions exactly how you would expect. I did send it through the dryer which may have caused it to shrink up a little.
One thing to note is that the Velcro loop 3″ x 2″ panel will not shrink. This causes a little arch but our heads have that shape as well so it’s really not noticeable.
If you want a merino wool cap then this is not that. These are well made, sewn in the USA, hats with a 3″ x 2″ embroidered piece of Velcro sewn into the front of them. If you’re in the market for that then we’ve got what you’re looking for!
