GORUCK recently split their GR2 product out into two separate versions. The traditional GR2 that people have come to know and love is now the 40L version. The recently released 34L option is a franken-pack which combines aspects from both the original GR2 and GR1 into something new.
If you are already a fan of GORUCK then you’ll feel right at home when you grab hold of this pack.
Everything you know and love about GORUCK can be found here. The idea behind this pack was to create a GR2 that was sized for normal people… people who aren’t 6’5″ like Jason.
All of the pockets found in the standard GR2 can be found here however they have a slightly reduced size. This pack is 2″ shorter than the 40L GR2 so everyone knew that change had to have some impact on the internals of the pack.
Same handy upper pocket is found in this pack like its older brother the 40L… just slightly smaller.
To make room for the 4 rows of webbing the inside pocket has been made shorter. This is a lot more noticeable if you compare a GR1 and GR2 side-by-side… something we’ll be posting soon.
Laptop pocket is present! And what’s that? An X? There was some extra chalk left on the pack when it showed up. Thankfully it’s easy to rub off with a wet towel.
A little bit of extra chalk on the shoulder as well… this stuff comes off easily too.
Notice anything in the above picture? Maybe something missing? There’s nothing propping up this GR2… it stands on its own. From what I know all GORUCK packs up until this point (at least the GR0, 3 GR1s, 2 GR2s, Bullet 10, and SD25) that I own cannot pull off this feat. Apparently the 34L GR2 has that ability. Marvel in it.
The 34L GORUCK GR2 can be found on the GORUCK website in both Black and Wolf Grey. Have any questions or comments? Feel free to leave them below!

Anyone has a GR2 34L black for sale???? Help me.
Brian Lohr says
I’d check the Buy/Sell/Trade post on the GORUCK sub-Reddit as well as the Ruckmall Facebook Group. Both those places usually have something for sale.

I’ve carried the 40L GR2 for 4 years. I recently bought a 34L also, but the slightly thicker 34L GR2 will not fit in the CRJ 200 overhead like my original 40L GR2 will. Just a data point, may not apply of you never fly with this bag.

Thanks Bill! That’s very interesting to hear… if anything I would have suspected the 34L version to fit better. Have you gone back to the 40L because of this or sticking with the 34L?

Thank you for the review. I am curious, do you find the GR2 40L too big? Does the 34L seem just right? I am trying to determine which ruck to purchase.
Thanks in advance.

What’s the use case? If I was told I needed to bring one GORUCK bag on a one week trip then it would be the 40L GR2. Anything outside of that I would scale down to the 34L GR2 as the 40L feels way too big for me. It might be useful to note that I’m 6’2″ and 180 lbs.

I recently purchased a 34L GR2 and I am currently using it to train for GoRuck HCL. This thing is indestructible, and I absolutely love it. It was your review that led me to purchase the GR2, thanks!

Glad you’re having such a good time with it!

Thanks for posting this preview! Looking forward to the comparison with the GR1. Curious if you are using the 34L GR2 for EDC use, and if so, your initial impressions and thoughts…
Brian Lohr says
It can definitely work as a larger EDC pack. It’s the same size as the GR1 just deeper. The organization on the inside is very nice to have as well!
