GORUCK has created two different cases (at very different price points) to carry pistols. The GORUCK Pistol Rug retails at $85 and the GORUCK Pistol Case retails at $155. Hopefully this post will give you enough pictures and comparison to determine which one is right for you.
Updates
We’ll continue to update this post with pictures of load outs so you can get a better feel for these cases.
GORUCK Pistol Gear Comparison
The GORUCK Pistol Rug is designed to carry your pistol, some ammo, and a few accessories to the range and back. The front features the normal 3″ x 2″ Velcro rectangle perfect for your favorite patch.
The back of the rug (pictured above) is flat and looks very similar to the case (pictured below).
As you can see the backs are identical besides the fact that the GORUCK Pistol Case is much taller and a little wider than the rug.
The front of the pistol case features the 3″ x 2″ Velcro rectangle that we all know and love as well as a second Velcro area underneath.
In addition the pistol case has a third Velcro area on the top of it perfect for a name tag strip.
In the above picture we have the GORUCK Pistol Rug on top and the GORUCK Pistol Case on bottom. As you can tell quite clearly the rug is a bit shorter and a little skinnier than the case.
The major physical difference between the case and the rug is the width of the cases. In addition the case has a real bottom to it while the rug’s fabric folds around to create a bottom.
The pistol case features the box stitch that GORUCK packs are known for while the rug has bartacking. The case is also much stiffer and more “framed out” than the rug.
On the top of cases the handles are identical to each other.
The pistol case includes two d-rings so you can attach a standard or padded shoulder strap (not included) onto it. In addition you could use them to hang stuff off of if you wanted to gypsy up your pistol case… your call on both.
The pistol case is able to stand up on it’s own (thanks to the real bottom) while the rug needs a little propping up. Above you can see the rug standing as it’s propped up against the case.
Opening the case you can see the entire inside is coated in Velcro. You can also see the bartacking on the left side where the handles are sewn into the rug. There’s not bartacking on the right as the right features a pocket directly behind the Velcro area. Just a side note that the case looks bloated here because I had to turn it inside out to get it to stay open. The Pistol rug does not stay open on it’s own so that was the best I could do to get a good picture.
The pocket features the GORUCK Rug logo and is a great spot to split in some notebooks or targets.
Opening up the pistol case you can see that there is both a lot more real-estate as well as a folder inside. How much more real-estate?
The pistol rug can fit easily within the case and there is still room to spare. While the rug can hold a pistol, a few boxes of ammo, and a couple mags the case can hold much, much more. I was able to get five boxes of ammo and three mags on one side of the case leaving the other three sides still open.
The other side of the flap features even more Velcro for attaching GORUCK’s firearms gear. There’s a small white tag within the case…
… which has a little GORUCK logo as well as the PO number for the case.
The insert on the GORUCK Pistol Case is thick which is nice because it can better hold the gear attached to it.
Gear Comparison Conclusion
If you already have a duffel bag that you take to the range then you’re probably good with just the GORUCK Pistol Rug. It will fit your handgun, your mags, and a box or two of ammo. You can store your ear and eye-pro in your other bag and be set. If you’re going light to the range then toss the eyepro in the rug and slip the earpro through the handle.
If you don’t have any range bag and want a case that can fit almost everything then the GORUCK Pistol Case might be a better option for you. You’ll have no problem bringing your pistol, a few hundred rounds of ammo, a few magazines, eyepro, and some earpro with you.
Personally, I will be using the GORUCK Pistol Case as my new range bag as it fits all of my needs. The GORUCK Pistol Rug is great so I’ll be keeping that around for quicker trip to the range. Whatever you end up going with you’ll be getting a GORUCK product that is made right here in the USA. Have any questions about these two cases? Leave a comment and we’ll do our best to answer them!
Are there any pistol rugs available for purchase on your site
I don’t have any for sale at the moment and I don’t know of any plans GORUCK has to re-release them.
