The DZ Cap is a 100% Merino Wool hat sewn in the USA by Destination Zero with imported wool from New Zealand. Although they’re still fairly new on the market they’ve amassed a good following and are already selling these caps in numerous colors and weights.
Review
Prior to writing this review I used the hats in the morning on my way to the gym and during three GORUCK events (two Challenges and one Light). I continue to use the hats after the events and you can hardly tell that they even went through them.
Quality
I own a couple Merino Wool hats, shirts, and other apparel in addition to this hat and, from what I can tell, the quality of this Merino and the sewing is very similar. I ran the green DZ Cap through both a GORUCK Challenge and a GORUCK Light and the black one through one GORUCK Challenge. They’re still holding together incredibly well and I plan on using them again soon at my next event.
Design
It’s designed like a hat and fits like a glove. If you have a larger head like mine the normal sized hats may not fit perfectly in which case, when ordering, you should request it to be made larger. Nick is very receptive to the comments made and, since these are made to order, he will help you get the perfect fitting cap.
Usability
The DZ Cap is super usable… you just put it on your head and it works. I had no issues with it falling off, getting stuck, or being at all in the way during my GORUCK events. One of the last things you want is to lose a hat in the middle of a crosswalk (or anywhere really) so knowing I won’t have that issue with these is a huge plus.
Value
The DZ Caps run around $24 and can be customized in size if you contact Nick (the owner of DZ USA). They’re made in the USA from, what I’m told is, some of the best Merino Wool from New Zealand. I did a quick search on amazon and the Merino Caps there are around $20, aren’t made in the USA, and don’t have an awesome patch area. I think $4 is more than worth the extra for everything you’re getting.
Conclusion
I love the two caps I have and I’ll definitely continue to use them and I’ll be ordering more. My goal is to talk Nick into making a hat for each style of GORUCK Special Event out there because there’s (probably) nothing better than a bunch of pumpkin heads at a Halloween GORUCK event.
