GORUCK has brought another “Built by SCARS” release this Friday, July 9th, 2022! All of the “Built by SCARS” gear is either limited, or semi-limited, edition. This release features the following:
- GR1 26L Tiger Stripe front panel with side handles and Velco loop webbing (1/1)
- GR1 Heritage 26L in Sand with MOLLE webbing (1/1)
- GR1 Heritage 26L in Navy with MOLLE webbing (1/1)
- Rucker 3.0 25L in Black with a hidden pocket and MCB shoulder straps (1/1)
- Patch Board with Tiger Stripe Arrowhead (1/1)
- Rucker 4.0 20L Street Parking x Built By Scars (~5 Released)
- Rucker 4.0 25L Street Parking x Built By Scars (~5 Released)
- Bullet Rucker 10L Street Parking x Built By Scars (~5 Released)
- Bullet Rucker 15L Street Parking x Built By Scars (~5 Released)
The 1/1 items above are noted that they’re one of one on the product pages which means that there was only one made. If there’s a “~”on the released number then those are my best guess at the numbers based on what I saw on the product pages when GORUCK released the gear.
“Built by SCARS” vs Hand Sewn by SCARS
Looking through pictures on the product pages I noticed that the internal labels of the Ruckers and Bullet Ruckers said “LIFETIME GUARANTEE” which is indicative of Vietnam-made as the USA made packs say “BUILT IN THE USA”. I reached out to GORUCK to confirm my suspicions and they confirmed the Ruckers and Bullet Ruckers are sewn in Vietnam then modified by SCARS at HQ in Florida.
GORUCK commented that the packs with “USA” in the title were made in the USA. With that information you can infer that if they don’t say “USA” in the title (even if they do say Built by SCARS) that they are not made in the USA. At this point “Built by SCARS” seems to be more like a brand and shouldn’t be an indicator that the gear was actually built by someone at SCARS or not.
The “Built by SCARS” Gear Drop
Here’s everything that was released under “Built by SCARS” on July 29th, 2022.
GR1 26L – USA – Built By Scars (Tiger Stripe Front Panel, Velcro MOLLE Webbing, & Side Handles)
First off is a 1 of 1 custom GR1 featuring Tiger Stripe front panel, exterior Velcro MOLLE webbing, and Tiger Stripe side handles. This was released at $425.
GR1 Heritage – USA – Built By SCARS (Webbing Added)
Next up are two 1 of 1 GR1 Heritage 26L ruckers featuring additional MOLLE webbing on front panel and shoulder straps. These are made in the USA and were released at $450 each.
Rucker 3.0 – Built By Scars (MultiCam Black Shoulder Straps & Hidden Pocket)
This is a 1 of 1 Rucker 3.0 featuring black MultiCam shoulder straps and a hidden internal pocket. It does not denote made in the USA so the assumption here is the ruck is made in Vietnam and the shoulder straps were replaced (plus hidden pocket added) by SCARS in Florida. This retailed for $255 on release.
Patch Board – Built By Scars (Tiger Stripe Arrowhead)
This giant patch board was displayed at GORUCK’s first Sandlot event. It is a 1 of 1 custom patch board with front facing Tiger Stripe Spearhead logo. There’s a front facing Velcro panel for patch attachment with sturdy ranger green Cordura backing. Corner grommets allow for easy wall display. Although it doesn’t say “USA” in the title the GORUCK SCARS Instagram page showed video of them making this in Florida so it can probably safely be assumed it was made by SCARS. This retailed at $50 which seems like a steal to me.
Rucker 4.0 – Street Parking x Built By Scars (Paracord Wrapped Handles)
These Rucker 4.0 packs feature paracord wrapped handles, custom colored zipper pulls, and a circle Street Rucker patch. These were released in both 20L and 25L sizes with both appearing to be made in Vietnam and modified by SCARS in Florida. The 20L version released at $265 and the 25L version (with hip belt) released at $285.
Bullet Rucker – Street Parking x Built By Scars (Paracord Wrapped Handles)
These Bullet Ruckers feature paracord wrapped handles, custom colored zipper pulls, and a circle street rucker patch. They were released in both 10L and 15L sizes with both appearing to be made in Vietnam and modified by SCARS in Florida. The 10L version released at $225 and the 15L version released at $245.
Final Thoughts
I’m a huge fan of the “Built By SCARS” program and love to see what they’re cooking up over there. I’m hoping this continues to be a regular thing with SCARS releasing these modified one-off items. I feel that this will only get use closer to what we know the community wants which is the ability to customize gear and fabric when you order.
I do feel that the Vietnam gear being modified by SCARS is a little weird and should be called out better on the product page. Maybe I’m just a stickler but if I bought something marked “Built By SCARS” and it turns out it was built in Vietnam and a SCARS tech paracord wrapped the handles I’d be a little miffed. Although this is my opinion I realize that I’m not always right so I’d love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments below. Also, if you picked up any of this gear leave a comment and let me know what you grabbed!

The patch board looks great. Would love it if they made more of them.

Agreed! Hopefully since they’ve been able to make one (that we know of) so far they’ll eventually start offering them.
