At GORUCK events I always use dry bags for my non-crushable items. This includes food, clothing, and my essentials (ID, $20 bill, and credit card). This does not include cell phones. I can’t recommend strongly enough that cell phones go into a hard waterproof container… but that’s for a different review.
The USMC SealLine sack is easily one of the best dry bags I’ve used to date. It’s affordable (mine was $17 shipped) and it’s large enough to fit a decent amount of food and clothing. I have had no problem getting a few bars, spare pair of socks, and a shirt in there comfortably. So far I’ve used the sack at the Seattle Halloween GORUCK Light and, like I previously mentioned, it performed wonderfully. I kept some spare bars in there and it stayed completely dry. This is extra important in the Pacific Northwest because there’s nearly nothing worse than saltwater soggy cliff bars… that’s a fact.
There are a lot of good dry bags out there so you’re probably wondering what makes this one different from the rest. This dry bag has a vent on the side that allows air to leave the bag. How quickly you might wonder? I’m able to get the bag flat in about three seconds. This comes in incredibly handy when trying to get your pack together quickly before moving out at an event. The vent lets air out but it, amazingly, does not let any water back in… which would have defeated the whole purpose if it did.
